About Châtel:

Chatel sits at the head of the picturesque Abondance valley, in the vast and world famous Portes du Soleil skiing area, in the Haute Savoie region of France. This village or small town, has retained its traditional savoyarde character and architecture and is a beautiful place to visit in both summer and winter. There is a mix on the hillsides and valley bottoms of old and new chalets, barns and farm buidlings, giving Chatel an "authentic" air, which feels different to some of the other more purpose built resorts that are found in the French Alps.

The Chatel ski areas are excellent in their own right, offering skiing and snowboarding for all abilities and easy links to the rest of the Portes du Soleil make the potential ski area a mind boggling 650km of pistes! Just a few minutes down the road are the smaller skiing resorts of Chapelle D'Abondance and Abondance, traditional family resorts, which are also well worth a visit.

Chatel is very easy to get to, as it's only an hour and a half from Geneva airport and less than 30 minutes from the Swiss motorway system. A free bus service within the Chatel area makes getting about very easy during the winter season.

The area is famous for its Abondance cheeses and local meats and you will find a large selection of quality restaurants in the village and on the mountain slopes. Traditional Savoyarde recipes are to be found in most establishments and you can also sample local produce at the weekly Wednesday market that is held in the centre of Chatel.

In summer, the village transforms itself into a spectacular display of flowers. Everywhere you look are beautiful hanging baskets or flower borders, making a stroll around Chatel a stunning experience. Some of the ski lifts open during the summer to provide some of the best prepared terrain in the Alps for mountain bikers of all abilities.

In summary, Chatel is a place that people fall in love with in both summer and winter. Come and visit!
